These days there’s a lot of information—and misinformation—floating around about hyaluronic acid fillers. So, it’s only natural to feel a little nervous about booking your first appointment, especially when “pillow face” horror stories and photos of injections gone very, very wrong are all over TikTok.

But if you’re curious about filler, those cautionary tales needn’t scare you. In the hands of the right provider, filler can enhance and even transform your face with just a few strategic pokes. Still, that means finding a skilled provider is essential—and so is knowing what to ask before they inject you. “Filler requires more than one skill set to excel: medical knowledge of anatomy, sterile technique, and ability to work gently with tissue, as well as an aesthetic eye and attention to detail,” says Caren Campbell, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in San Francisco.

To Dr. Campbell’s point, getting filler may not take very long most of the time, but it’s still a medical procedure and should be taken seriously—which is where a consult comes in. Ideally, you see a qualified, board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for the procedure. But even if you’re seeing another type of provider—say, at a med spa—a good practitioner should be more than happy to discuss all your concerns. “The industry works hard to sell [getting filler] as an easy, breezy, in-and-out enhancement, but at the end of the day, it’s a needle going into your body…. A consult is the best way to ensure you’re making an educated decision and getting all your questions answered,” Dr. Campbell says.

Not sure what to ask? Ahead, we’ve laid out some thought starters for your first filler appointment.

    Meet the experts:

    • Caren Campbell, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in San Francisco.
    • Dendy Engelman, MD, is a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon in New York City.
    • Brendan Camp, MD, is a double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist in New York City and Long Island.

    What are your credentials?

To ensure your safety and treatment quality, it’s best to see a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for hyaluronic acid filler injections. While filler is readily available at med spas and “injectable bars,” you want to be confident that you’re putting your face in the hands of an expert.

In Dr. Campbell’s view, injectors should be physicians from specialties “that perform surgery and a lot of medical procedures so they’ve got a deep understanding of anatomy to inject and potentially manage any complications from the procedures they’re performing,” says Dr. Campbell. “Unfortunately, given the aesthetic industry’s big push to ‘train’ more and more injectors with little to no expertise, there are lots of ‘providers’ performing medical procedures that should require years of training,” she continues.

Dr. Campbell’s thoughts align with Allure’s ongoing stance that any procedure that crosses the skin barrier should be performed with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon present—but this doesn’t always happen at med spas due to lax and inconsistent regulations that vary from state to state. For example, a 2023 study in Dermatologic Surgery found that of nearly 130 med spas reviewed in the greater Chicago area, more than 80% didn’t have a doctor on-site. Until med spas are better regulated, you’ll definitely want to proceed with caution and ask the right questions to ensure you’re working with a qualified professional.

No matter where you choose to seek care, watch out for red flags, like providers who “can’t clearly explain their credentials, treatment plan, or product choice,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon in New York City. “Be cautious if they don’t perform a full-face assessment or if they suggest excessive filler,” she adds. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to filler, so what constitutes “excessive” can vary from patient to patient, but if this is a concern for you, it’s a good idea to look for an injector with a lighter touch. Dr. Engelman recommends taking a peek at a provider’s website or social media to get an idea of their work before booking your visit—do the results look natural or overfilled? In addition, she recommends avoiding “clinics that don’t use FDA-approved products or fail to warn of all potential risks and aftercare.”

Why is hyaluronic acid the best type of filler to address my concerns?

Sure, you’ve probably heard a lot about dermal filler, but do you know the difference between hyaluronic acid (also called HA) filler and biostimulatory filler, or why you’d choose one over the other? The world of injectables is confusing and ever-changing, so don’t be afraid to ask what might feel like a “silly” question; trust us, it’s not silly!

Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding molecule that helps maintain skin hydration and elasticity, and it’s found naturally in the body. “As we age we naturally produce less collagen, so HA is a great way to bring back the appearance of plumper, more hydrated skin,” says Dr. Engelman. “When injected, HA restores lost volume, smooths fine lines, and supports the skin’s structural matrix,” she explains. You might use hyaluronic acid to add volume to “less mobile” areas like the temples and midface or to tweak your facial shape by altering the appearance of the nose, jawline, or lips.

Biostimulatory filler, on the other hand, helps boost collagen production, so the results become more noticeable over time, unlike the quick effects of an HA filler. It can be used in various places, including the cheeks and temples. Providers may also use it to improve the look of crepey skin on the arms, around the elbows, and on the upper knees.

Long story short, you want to ensure your provider is recommending the type of filler that will deliver the results you want. Asking them to explain the rationale behind their recommendation can help ensure you and your injector are on the same page.

Which filler are you injecting and why?

Popular brands like Juvéderm and Restylane make their fillers with hyaluronic acid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean each formula will give you the same result. Dr. Engelman recommends asking your provider which formula they recommend for your desired look and why they think it’s the right fit. What works well for teeny-tiny wrinkles may not be the best fit for the lips and vice versa. For example, Dr. Campbell likes using Juvéderm’s Voluma XC and Restylane’s Lyft in the cheeks and Restylane Defyne in the chin but notes that it’s more about the skill of your injector and their expertise than the brand name. “The painter needs to know how to mix the paint,” she says.

What results can I reasonably expect?

Hyaluronic acid filler can boost small or deflated lips, smooth wrinkles, add volume and plumpness, and even enhance skin texture, but it’s not a cure-all.

Brendan Camp, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist in New York City and Long Island, says patients sometimes think filler can do more than it actually can and your provider should help manage your expectations. “Fillers do not pull the skin up and back, which is what patients often do to their skin when looking at themselves in the mirror,” he notes. “Looking in the mirror with the patient together and giving them an idea of what fillers can accomplish is important to do before any filler procedure to set realistic expectations.”

Still, Dr. Campbell says, “we have lots of tools in our tool kit,” which means that there’s probably something to help achieve your desired look, even if it’s not hyaluronic acid filler. So don’t be afraid to ask about your options should your provider fail to suggest alternatives. Dr. Campbell uses an analogy with patients to explain how combining various treatments can give them the results they want: Your face is like a chair. “You have your wooden frame, your foam, and the upholstery. Ideally, you are addressing all layers in an effort to look your best,” she says. Dr. Campbell uses a biostimulatory filler like Sculptra as the “frame” and considers hyaluronic acid filler the “cushion,” providing soft volume. Finally, skin care, Botox, and other treatments such as lasers treat the “upholstery.” A quality provider should be able to offer a holistic view and a comprehensive plan to suit your needs and address your concerns.

When in doubt, bring photos to share with your doctor. These can serve as a good starting point for a transparent conversation about the results you can expect. “I always advise coming into your appointment and consultation with a clear vision of your aesthetic goals, ideally with photo references if you can,” says Dr. Engelman.

How do I avoid looking “overfilled”?

If that’s something you’re worried about, bring it up! Quality providers will be more than willing to explain what they recommend and why. Plus, one injector’s definition of “natural” may not be the same as another’s. (That’s why asking for before-and-after pictures from a provider’s previous patients is another important step before moving forward with treatment.)How should I prepare for my injection appointment?

Before coming back for injectables, it’s wise to ask your provider what you should do—or avoid doing—beforehand. For example, Dr. Camp tells his patients to steer clear of alcohol the night before getting filler, and to stop taking aspirin and certain supplements (such as fish oil) a week before. All of these things can have a blood-thinning effect that can worsen bruising. He also advises patients with a history of cold sores to consider taking an antiviral medication (either a prescription drug such as valacyclovir or an over-the-counter option like Abreva) before their filler appointment to help ward off flare-ups triggered by injections near the mouth. Additionally, Dr. Engelman recommends showing up sans makeup to reduce the risk of infection. It’s definitely worth asking your provider if they have any similar recommendations for you.

How will you minimize pain during the injections?

Filler can be a bit painful, both in the moment and for a short time after, though many filler products contain lidocaine to help numb the treated area. Doctors have different preferences when it comes to pain-management techniques, so it’s never a bad idea to ask your provider about their approach. For example, Dr. Campbell likes to give patients stress balls and play relaxing music in addition to applying pre-injection numbing cream to minimize pain.

What should I know about post-injection care and avoiding potential side effects?

Hyaluronic acid filler is generally very safe, provided you’re working with an experienced professional, says Dr. Engelman. Before you head home, though, it’s smart to ask your injector about what side effects are and are not a cause for concern, and how they suggest treating the most common issues that tend to crop up. You may encounter some mild after effects, including “temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at the injection site.” Ice packs or a cold compress can help relieve some of these issues.

As for post-injection care, if you’re a regular exerciser, your provider may recommend that you get your workout in before your appointment, rather than after. Vigorous exercise, as well as steam rooms and saunas, can sometimes cause bruising or filler migration, Dr. Camp explains. You can typically resume normal activities after 24 to 48 hours; however, it’s best to consult with your injector to confirm.

How do I know if I’m experiencing side effects from the filler, and what is your plan in the event of an emergency?

Before injecting you with anything, a good provider should be able to outline how they’d help if you experience a complication. They should also explain the symptoms to watch for, like severe pain or skin-color changes, that warrant calling them or going to the emergency room.

For example, whitening of the skin, dusky discoloration, or blotchy red, purple, dark brown, or grey patches near the injection site may be a sign of compromised blood flow, which requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms like sudden vision changes, persistent swelling or redness, and lumps that last longer than a few days may indicate that you’re experiencing side effects such as vascular issues, an infection, or an inflammatory reaction to the filler. Less common side effects include long-lasting lumps and asymmetry. Vascular complications can also occur if the filler is placed incorrectly. Since complications can quickly become medical emergencies, it’s good to know how your provider plans to care for you should that happen before you get any injections.

How long does hyaluronic acid filler last?

You may not want your filler to look super obvious, but you probably want the results to last. Longevity depends on the type of filler you get and where it’s placed, though most HA fillers generally last anywhere from a few months to a year. Ask your injector what you can expect.

What happens if I’m unhappy with my results?

If you do wind up feeling meh about your results, there’s a good chance your provider will tell you not to jump to conclusions and take a beat. It can take up to four weeks for the swelling to subside and the filler to settle.

That said, you might find it comforting to know that hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase, which Dr. Engelman says can break down the substance within hours (though it may take longer). “This reversibility offers reassurance that results aren’t permanent,” Dr. Engelman says.

However, patients should still place their trust in an experienced provider who knows how to address any issues, so definitely ask the practice how it handles these situations. Will your provider try to finesse the filler or dissolve it? Are corrections free, or do they charge a fee? If there is a fee, how much is it? These are important things to know before getting an injectable.

Although it can feel intimidating at first, arriving at your injection consultation with a few thoughtful questions prepared can be a game changer for easing any nerves and making you feel more confident in your decision.

Kim Kardashian is in her super-tight updo era. For nearly a month now—basically the entire length of the press push for her new show, All's Fair—the multi-hyphenate has called upon either Dimitris Giannetos or Chris Appleton to slick back her hair and sculpt it into different takes on twists and buns. (Remember that structural chignon in Paris? Art!) But even though I've come to expect seeing Kardashian's hair pulled tautly off her face and twirled and tied in highly hairsprayed ways, I never anticipated seeing her in the fanciful hair accessory she just donned in Brazil.

For yet another All's Fair premiere event, this time in Rio de Janeiro, Kardashian joined her costars on the red carpet, wearing a “custom demi couture silk crepe satin, chiffon and vintage feather gown,” according to an Instagram post by the designer himself, Connor Ives. But “vintage” is an understatement. He goes on to say, “The feathers come from an Edwardian fan that was reconstituted for this piece.” That's not just vintage, that's antique. We're talking more than a century ago.

And it appears Ives had a couple of extra feathers lying around because at least one ended up in Kardashian's hair.

Absolutely no hair is out of place in this updo—this gel application deserves an award. And just to give it a little less of an immaculate feel, the ends are pulled out of the bun for an intentionally messy look. And those sculpted wisps work perfectly with the curves and fuzzy threads of the feather. It's whimsical glamour meets Yankee Doodle.

I can't help but wonder if this updo phase is exclusive to the All's Fair press tour arc. (She even wore a tight updo to her mom Kris Jenner's 70th birthday party.) But either way, I'm hoping this ushers in an era of getting playful with unexpected hair accessories.

Sensitive Skin? Meet the Vitamin C Serum That Won’t Upset Your Barrier

Even as a beauty writer, I’m a simple gal when it comes to skin care. My typical lineup is cleanser, a thrice-weekly exfoliant, moisturizer, and SPF, and getting me to change up my current faves takes a lot of convincing. I dabble with serums here and there—some I finish, some I don’t—but I rarely add a new active ingredient like vitamin C, which is typically too irritating for my skin. That is, until Trinny London’s Naked Ambition serum came along. This little powerhouse pairs a slow-release vitamin C with azelaic acid exosomes—tiny vesicles that help deliver acne- and rosacea-fighting ingredients deep into the skin—to tackle everything from redness and dark spots to uneven tone, all while giving your skin a serious radiance boost. And the kicker? The brand claims you can see results in just two weeks. Needless to say, I was intrigued.

As someone with chronically dull, sun-spotted skin, I took the arrival of this serum as a sign from above. I’ve been using it since October 2—so just over four weeks now—and I can definitely see a difference. Keep reading to find out why it has earned a permanent spot at the top of my skin-care “menu.”

    My Skin Goals

I have acne-prone combination skin that’s quick to rebel whenever I try something new. My breakouts rarely show up as angry, red pimples—instead, I get tiny bumps and clogged pores, the sneaky kind that make skin look uneven when the light hits. The right product keeps them at bay, but when a formula isn’t a match, my skin gives me a very clear (very textured) warning. My biggest test when adding a new product is that it brightens my skin without causing flare-ups or enhancing sensitivity. It also can’t tip the balance toward extra dryness or oiliness. Basically, it needs to deliver a just-left-a-facial glow without the drama, which is historically challenging in the world of vitamin C.

    First Impressions

Before I even pumped it out, I was impressed with the refillable bottle—you can repurchase the product without the full packaging for $10 less. The milky-gel texture (which is not oily in the slightest) glides easily over the skin and sinks in quickly without leaving a heavy or shiny finish. There’s a slight tingle at first (hello, azelaic acid), which feels like the formula is doing its job rather than irritating my barrier. However, it did surprise me initially since the brand claims this formula is a winner for vitamin C newbies or those with sensitive skin.

    The Formula

What makes this formula so gentle? It comes down to smart chemistry. Ohio-based Cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos explains that ascorbyl glucoside—a vitamin C derivative that converts to active L-ascorbic acid once it hits the skin—is the second ingredient listed, meaning it’s present at a potent, effective level. At a balanced 10% concentration (compared to Trinny’s powerhouse Boost Up serum, which packs 30% for seasoned users), it delivers the brightening, firming benefits of vitamin C without the sting. Unlike pure L-ascorbic acid, which requires a low, potentially irritating pH of around 3.5, ascorbyl glucoside is water-stable and lands in a skin-friendly pH range of 5 to 7. “That stability is incredibly important,” says Dobos. “Even though L-ascorbic acid is highly efficacious, it’s notoriously hard to keep stable—if it’s degraded by the time you open the bottle, what’s the point?”

The ascorbyl glucoside in the formula is also paired with other antioxidants like vitamin E, which New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Patricia Wexler, MD, told Allure boosts vitamin C’s efficacy. “Together, they can provide double protection against free-radical damage,” she says. It also has red algae, which is rich in antioxidants that help protect skin from environmental stressors, while boosting hydration and radiance.

The other star of the formula is 10% azelaic acid, a sensitive skin-friendly active that is actually derived from barley, rye grains, and wheat. Thanks to its exfoliating, blackhead-clearing, and antibacterial properties, it tackles breakouts and uneven texture without the drama (no surprise my skin didn’t freak out). Azadeh Shirazi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in La Jolla, California, tells Allure that the highest concentration for over-the-counter azelaic acid is 15%, so the fact that this one is 10% makes it a solid bet for those with sensitive skin. She explains the acid works by inhibiting tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for pigment production), thereby helping to fade dark spots and even out skin tone—and goes as far as to call azelaic acid “a true jack-of-all-trades, and one of the most underrated ingredients in skin care.”

    How I Use It

As the brand suggests, I’ve been using this serum in the morning right after cleansing and before moisturizer and SPF. The formula sinks in almost instantly, even with two pumps, leaving my skin comfortably hydrated but never greasy (a win for my combination skin). Because it absorbs so quickly, it layers seamlessly with the rest of my routine, as opposed to causing pilling or weird texture clashes. I eased my skin into Naked Ambition by using it every few days, and now I reach for it daily without a second thought.

    The Results

After four weeks of using this serum every morning, my skin feels noticeably smoother, my tone looks brighter and more even, and I haven’t experienced the usual seasonal dryness that comes with colder weather. Trinny London’s Naked Ambition Serum has become one of those rare new additions I genuinely like: It doesn’t break me out, feels weightless, and actually delivers results without irritation. If you’ve steered clear of vitamin C serums because of the sting or sensitivity they can cause, consider this your gentle entry point to a glowier, more even complexion.

We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best beauty products, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team of in-house writers and editors, as well as contributors, along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more about our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

    TL;DR:

    • What it is: A gel-like liquid blush with a built-in cushion applicator
    • What it does: Gives a natural, glowy flush of color in just a tap to the cheeks
    • Who it’s for: Anyone looking for a gorgeous, but easy-to-use liquid blush and/or highlighter

If I’m going to wear makeup, there must be blush. That wasn’t always the case, but over the last couple of years—thanks to so many new formats on the market (gels, creams, liquids, powders, sticks)—it’s been almost impossible not to fall in love with blush. And now, my makeup look just isn’t complete without it.

I’ve tried, well, pretty much all of the different iterations (perks of being a beauty director!), and while I love cream-based formulas, I always seem to come back to liquid options. It’s just what seems to work best for my skin, my routine, and my overall vibe.

Right now, my go-to is the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand. While it’s technically more of a gel than a liquid, I find that it applies similarly and offers potent pigment payoff with just a tiny bit of product. Plus, it can be built up and blends beautifully into skin. I also love its cushion-sponge applicator because it’s so easy to use—twist open the tube, squeeze to dispense, and then dab directly onto cheekbones using the cushion-covered applicator head.

While I like to tap with my fingers to lightly diffuse, you can also use a tapered brush to blend (in an upward direction toward the temples) to create a natural, lifted look. The result? A gorgeous natural flush with a whole lot of luminosity.

My favorite shade is the rosy Glowgasm Beauty Light Wand in Pinkgasm because it pairs perfectly with almost any look, but I’ve tried them all, and they’re all so good—you can’t go wrong! (In the November Beauty Box, you could choose between rose gold Pillow Talk Original, shimmery champagne Hollywood Beauty Light Wand in Spotlight, or rosy Glowgasm Beauty Light Wand in Pinkgasm.)

You can find the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand, along with other editor-loved products, in the November Allure Beauty Box.

I'm always impressed at the variety of updo styles worn by Kate Middleton and other members of the royal family, especially when hats and fascinators are involved. Crafting an on-theme hairstyle that follows the royal rules and fits underneath the various hats is a unique blend of math and science, and for her first appearance at the Armistice Day Service of Remembrance, the Princess of Wales wore a complex knotted side bun with a series of twists, turns, and swirls.

For the solemn occasion, Middleton wore a long black coatdress and angled hat, under which she tucked an updo made of a series of small buns and swirls. Her golden brown hair was swept to one side, looped, and twisted in an intricate but soft style. Two sections nearest to her face were twisted around each other and pinned near her ear, with the lengths gathered up in a thick knotted, braided swirl of hair tucked up by one ear. The hat was then placed perfectly atop the rolled portion, and she added a pair of ruby and diamond earrings.

The Princess's appearance at Armistice Day is a significant one; People notes that the ceremony is typically only attended by blood royals on behalf of the royal family. She observed two minutes of silence to remember those who served and died in combat and later met with veterans. Prior to Armistice Day, Princess Kate attended the Remembrance Sunday service wearing her hair down instead of pinned up in a chignon, this time paired with a smaller fascinator versus a broad-brimmed hat.

Middleton has a wide repertoire of side buns and chignons for such high-profile occasions; in the past, we've seen the future queen in a thick, Princess Leia-style side bun and a low wrapped updo, among many others. And I've got a feeling there's more where that came from, as we're heading into the holiday season—a season primed for all sorts of upstyles!

Moisturizer is deeply personal—sort of like coffee orders or signature scents. I’ve never been loyal to just one because my skin’s too moody for that; between weather shifts, stress, and hormones (thanks, postpartum life), what works one month suddenly doesn’t the next. In the warmer months, I stick to lightweight formulas that won’t make my face feel slick, but when the air turns cold and dry, I reach for something rich and creamy. Then I met Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer, a 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner—and for the first time, I thought, “Maybe I could actually commit.” It’s the skin-care equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack, as it truly doubles as both moisturizer and primer. And after a few weeks of using it, I’m starting to believe “the one” might actually exist. Here’s what happened when I put it to the test.

My Skin Goals: Hydration without Heaviness

I have dry, sensitive skin that tends to freak out the second the temperature dips below 60 degrees. Tightness and dullness set in, followed by those flaky patches on my cheeks that no amount of foundation can disguise. In fact, makeup only makes them more obvious.

What I need out of a moisturizer isn’t just hydration—it’s balance. I want something replenishing enough to heal and smooth, but not so occlusive that it clogs pores or leaves a greasy film. A product that feels indulgent, yes, but also performs and keeps my skin comfortable and makeup-ready from morning drop-off to afternoon meetings.

First Impressions: From Rich to Weightless

At first glance, Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer looks buttery and thick in the jar—the kind of texture that usually spells too rich. But the moment I scoop some out, it immediately melts into my skin. The texture is plush and nourishing but somehow still light enough to disappear without a trace.

Allure contributing commerce writer Christa Joanna Lee applying the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer

    Christa Joanna Lee

Then there’s the scent: a bright, natural blend of grapefruit and geranium oils that’s fruity and fresh. It’s free of synthetic fragrance (the kind that can trigger irritation for sensitive types like me), which makes it all the more enjoyable. It’s one of those products that instantly lifts your mood the moment you open the lid, yet it never feels overpowering.

    The Formula: Classics That Deliver

What makes this moisturizer-primer hybrid so effective is its thoughtful blend of skin-strengthening ingredients designed to hydrate, protect, and prep.

You’ve probably seen squalane everywhere lately. It’s ultra-light yet nourishing, making it one of the most universally loved ingredients in moisturizers. “Squalane is a lightweight, saturated lipid that helps replenish the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss. It occurs naturally in the skin’s sebum, making it highly biocompatible and well tolerated across all skin types,” says Shannon Humphrey, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in British Columbia, Canada. In other words, it hydrates without clogging pores—the perfect base for any skin type, but especially for extra-dry skin like mine.

A photo of a woman dipping her finger into a jar of Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base

    Christa Joanna Lee

Shea butter brings that cushiony, rich texture. “It contains fatty acids and vitamins A and E that deeply nourish and soften the skin. Shea butter also soothes irritation, reduces redness, and provides lasting hydration for dry or inflamed skin,” says Anetta Reszko, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. This is the ingredient that makes this product feel so comforting—it locks in moisture and keeps skin supple long after application.

Speaking of hydrators, hyaluronic acid also plays a starring role. “Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it one of the most effective hydrating ingredients," says Dr. Reszko. “It keeps skin plump, smooth, and elastic while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and dryness.” That instant plumping effect is exactly what makes my skin look fresher and my foundation apply more evenly.

And then there’s the vitamin trio that makes this formula truly multitasking. “Vitamins C, E, and B work beautifully together. Vitamin C protects and brightens, vitamin E enhances and stabilizes it, and vitamin B calms and supports barrier health for a resilient, luminous complexion,” says Dr. Humphrey.

It’s also packed with emollients like dimethicone and glycerin, which give it that priming power—creating a soft, even canvas that makes makeup glide on and stay put. You don’t often find a formula that nails hydration, nourishment, and makeup performance all at once, but this one somehow pulls it off effortlessly.

How It Fits Into My Routine

In the mornings, it’s the last step in my skin-care regimen (right before SPF). It doesn’t pill under foundation—a huge win for dry skin—and since adding it to my routine, I’ve completely ditched using a separate primer. My makeup goes on smoother, stays fresh longer, and leaves my skin looking naturally glowy.

At night, I sometimes use it as my moisturizer, too. Even though it’s marketed as a primer, it’s rich and hydrating enough to double as a night cream without clogging pores. On nights when I’m too tired for my full skin-care lineup (which, as a busy mom, is most nights), I just cleanse, pat dry, and slather on a generous layer of Face Base. By morning, my skin feels soft, balanced, and happy.

The Results: My Skin, But Better

After a few weeks of using it once or twice daily, the change was undeniable. The flaky patches on my cheeks are gone. Makeup glides on with ease, and even on no-makeup days, my complexion looks naturally luminous instead of dull.

I still believe moisturizer is personal; it has to work with your skin, your routine, your life. But somehow, this one manages to do it all. It’s the kind of formula that adapts to dry skin, tired skin, and everything in between—and that’s what makes it so good. If you love products that multitask (or just don’t have time for a lot of steps), Face Base more than earns its spot on your vanity.

No knock to the flatiron you've been loyal to since 10th grade, but the best hair-straightening brushes—styling tools that combine a flatiron and a hair brush—are changing the game. More intuitive than a traditional straightener, hot brushes are combed through the hair the same way you use a regular brush. They minimize damage and frizz, and transform second-day hair. Unlike many straighteners, they don’t clamp your hair and typically use lower heat to leave strands smooth and bouncy rather than pin-straight. If you've dismissed these tools in the past after trying a model that left your hair more scorched than smooth, we promise this new crop of gadgets has majorly turned a corner. We checked in with Allure editors and experts for their takes on the best hair-straightening brushes and got some pro hairstylist insight while we were at it.

Why we love it: The Dyson Airwrap Coanda 2.0 is the brand’s smartest, most powerful multistyler yet—and yes, it’s even better than the original. With double the air pressure, a new motor, and automatic heat adaptation, it smooths, stretches, and styles hair faster than ever. Whether you’re going for a voluminous blowout, loose waves, or sleek, straight strands, each of the six intelligent attachments adapts automatically to your styling needs (and hair type) for salon-level results at home. Reach for the Anti-Snag Loop Brush 2.0 for your straightening sessions because it glides through hair effortlessly (no tugging, pulling, or snags).

Those with thick or curly hair will especially appreciate how effortlessly it smooths frizz and defines texture without the need for a flatiron. The best part? It connects to the MyDyson app via Bluetooth to create a custom heat and airflow profile. And because it automatically shuts off when set down, it’s as safe and thoughtful as it is high-performing. Translation: red carpet hair in minutes.

“This is the best Dyson tool I have ever tried—period. I have type 3A curly hair that I sometimes wear natural and sometimes blow-dry; this version of the Airwrap gets whatever look I want to achieve done in 15 minutes or less (yes!). This is coming from someone with low-porosity hair that takes seemingly forever to dry. The fact that I can get my curly hair handled before one of my two kids notices I'm gone is a miracle in itself. I love to use the round brush to create gentle tension that makes my blowouts last for days on end; the attachment is a vast improvement over the older version, IMO. This new iteration gets far closer to the roots for a more natural finish. There's zero frizz, all volume, and just the most Farrah Fawcett-like hair of your life—no tugging, singing, or sore arms necessary. And the diffuser? There are two settings, and both are so effective at giving you bouncy and juicy curls. One really amazing feature is that the tool automatically shuts off when it senses that it’s been put down, an unexpected but much-loved perk for routine stylers like me.

If you have the original Airwrap, if you're new to multistylers, or if you're Dyson-curious, this is the product to buy—especially in this new Amber Silk color. It’s a pretty warm honey that's more my style than the classic midnight blue. Any Dyson is an investment, and while this one's steep, you'll be able to kiss your curling iron, blow dryer, and straightener goodbye with a single hot tool. For curly girls especially, it's nice to have a tool that feels tailor-made for your routine. The only person I might not recommend it for? A constant traveler who loves doing their hair on the go; the power cord is heavy and not very compact, making this less frequent flier-friendly than other stylers on the market.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Why we love it: If you have curly or coily hair and want a blow-dry brush that works with your texture instead of against it, the Shark Glossi Blowout Brush will seal the deal. Its teardrop-shaped barrel hugs the roots and smooths hair from end to end without snagging or tugging. Think of it as a round brush, ceramic hot tool, and air styler all in one: It has two modes to accommodate wet or dry strands (a rarity for straightening brushes) and leaves behind a bouncy, glossy finish every time. The brand’s GlossLock Technology seals in up to 24 hours of frizz-resistant shine, while Smart Heat Sense Technology keeps the temperature below 302°F to help protect fragile curls from heat damage.

“My fastest routine hack ever? Using this Shark Glossi brush. This gets me and my curly hair out of the shower and through the front door in 20 minutes, flat. The handle is smaller than the average blow-dryer brush that I've used, making it easier and more comfortable to maneuver around my head (especially important if you're in a rush to begin with), and it can be used on dry or wet hair. I love how straightforward the product is, but be patient with the motions: You'll need to practice a bit to ensure you use the straightening section correctly when transitioning from wet to dry. Once you have it down, the whole thing is a breeze. It's not a tool I'd use for styling—given that the head is so large, I definitely need to get closer to the roots or S-wave my hair with a straightener—but that's not what it's for! The Glossi is great for quick and smooth utility drying, and would be great for travel. Don't want to chance it on a hotel blow dryer, or pack multiple tools? This is your one and done. (PS: The Shark Speed Style has a much smaller head that lets you style and blow-dry simultaneously; I use this one more often when I have time on my hands.)” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

"I'm no expert at styling my hair, so the more straightforward a tool, the better—and I really appreciate that Revlon's One-Step Plus doesn't have much of a learning curve. I douse my hair in a leave-in conditioner with built-in heat protectant, wrap everything in a microfiber towel to let it all soak in, and wait until it's about 60% dry before gently blasting it with medium heat. I work in small sections around my head, running the brush through multiple times to make sure everything is fully dry. I'll sometimes set my front pieces with the cool shot mode, but I'm not super precious about it. The tool itself is still rather bulky for my liking—even though the top of the handle is slimmer than that of the 1.0—but it gets a good job for the price, and there's a good chance you can snag the tool when it's on sale.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

The It's Giving Body Hot Thermal Round Brush has one universal heat setting (355°F) for safe styling, and its thin barrel lends to serious volume at the root and either sleek straight strands or soft ringlets, if you want a bit of bounce. It's quick to heat up (you'll know it's ready when you hear a double beep), and the negative ionic construction means smooth, low-static results. Plus, if you have textured or curly hair, no sweat: We've found that brush is a good match for all hair types. Keep in mind that since this brush has a narrower barrel, it may take a bit longer to style thick hair (It's worth the extra 10 minutes, we promise!).

There's no auto shut-off or other fancy features, but in our testing, it styled hair in half the time it usually took with a hair dryer and round brush. "I'll admit there's a bit of a learning curve with this thermal brush, but overall, I'm really happy with how easy it is to mimic the results of a blowout. For my longer layers, wrapping my hair around the brush before gently pulling, while twisting, did the trick for creating a nice curl all the way through. Its curling capabilities for short hair are a bit more limited; however, I found turning the brush towards my face added a nice ‘swoop’ effect. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a hair-straightening brush and a flatiron?

"A thermal brush has bristles, resembling a brush, and a hair straightener does not have any bristles," says New York City-based hairstylist Devin Toth. Capisce? Both tools use heat to style your hair, delivering results ranging from pin-straight tresses to bouncy waves, but employ different constructions to do so.

What should I look for when choosing a hair-straightening brush?

Your choice of hair-straightening brushes depends on price range, personal preference on shape and size, and the results you want from your new tool. "I think most tools in this space have similar features, so I would look for a barrel shape and size that resembles the tightness of curl you are trying to achieve," suggests Toth. "For example, a flat thermal brush will give you straight hair, a thermal brush with a tiny barrel shape will give you curl, and a thermal brush with a large barrel shape will give you more of a bouncy blowout."

    Are hair-straightening brushes safe?

As with any thermal hair-styling tool, hair-straightening brushes are safe as long as you're smart about use. "Keep them moving and don't overheat any one area of hair for too long," says Toth. "And don't use the highest heat setting unless you absolutely need to." Finally, before using any heat on your hair, always prep using a heat protectant.

Another tip? Los Angeles-based hairstylist and founder of Trademark Beauty, Joseph Maine, pointed out the importance of keeping your hot tool spick and span (a.k.a. removing hair buildup after use) so it heats evenly and doesn’t snag your hair.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers' experience levels. For instance, an innovative new hair dryer may feature industry-leading technology, but if the only people who find it intuitive to use are professional hairstylists, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our review of the best hair-straightening brushes, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hair stylists—who have different types of hair, concerns, desired outcomes. Testers considered performance across three primary categories: efficacy, safety and ease of use, and value. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Using the best OSEA products is like taking a trip to Malibu’s coast without ever leaving your bathroom. Pronounced oh-SEE-uh, the brand’s name stands for Ocean, Sun, Earth, and Atmosphere, a nod to its holistic approach to wellness, nature, and skin care. OSEA’s story actually starts long before it became a skin-care line, when the founder’s grandmother recovered from an injury through daily sea swims and seaweed treatments. The family became convinced that the ocean wasn’t just a way to relax—it was restorative. That idea became the backbone of OSEA, with undaria algae (a mineral-rich seaweed rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and firming benefits) appearing in so many of its formulations.

The marine-based ingredients are the reason why their body oil became a viral bestseller, why their exfoliators leave skin insanely smooth, and why the body butter gives skin that just-got-back-from-the-beach glow—no matter where you live. Ahead, we rounded up our favorite OSEA face and body products that leave skin feeling soft, radiant, and a little more California cool.

Why it's worth it: If you want an all-over glow year-round (even if your skin is currently hiding under a chunky sweater—you still know it’s there), this 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner is the body oil to beat. Undaria Algae Body Oil’s star ingredient, undaria seaweed, is packed with antioxidants and minerals that help visibly firm and smooth skin over time. It’s blended with moisture-locking sunflower seed oil, white lupin flower extract to improve elasticity, and passionfruit oil for a hit of lightweight, never-greasy nourishment. The silky texture melts fast, leaving behind a hydrated, subtle sheen and a fresh, citrusy scent. One pump really does go a long way, thanks to its concentrated formula.

“I’m officially on my third bottle of OSEA’s Undaria Algae Body Oil, and yes, it’s that good. What I love most is the shine it offers from head to toe. It’s not greasy or glittery, just this subtle, healthy, natural-looking glow. The scent is super light and fresh, so it never competes with my perfume. And it absorbs fast, which is a nonnegotiable for me. I use it post-shower, and my skin feels baby soft and stays hydrated all day.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

“I'm not a diehard body-oil user, but when I'm pregnant, it becomes a must-have. I've been slathering this stuff on my belly, and it's just as good as everyone says. It's rich and viscous in a satisfying way—unlike, say, a dry oil—but sinks in so fast that it has yet to stain any of my clothes. And the scent is a little fruity, a little herbal, but all-around uplifting, making it perfect for slathering on before I start my day.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: If this jar looks familiar, it’s because we recently crowned it our favorite body butter of all time. Undaria Algae Body Butter is the richer, whipped version of the brand’s fan-favorite body oil, delivering long-lasting moisture without feeling greasy or heavy. The formula includes nourishing “ingredients like shea butter and ceramides, which help repair the skin’s moisture barrier,” Michael H. Gold, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Nashville, previously told Allure. If you’re dealing with signs of aging, the blend of undaria seaweed extract and caffeine helps visibly firm and refine texture over time, while oat extract and aloe step in to calm dryness and irritation (so, a win for sensitive skin, too). But no matter where you fall on the skin-type spectrum, the hydration payoff is the same: plush, moisturized skin that stays soft for up to 72 hours.

“This body butter smells absolutely divine—it's got a mild enough scent as to not overwhelm, but rather to make you feel luxurious and moisturized. I appreciate how thick this cream is because with just one application, I feel like I wouldn't need to use body lotion again until tomorrow! Perfect for dry or winter weather, especially for us dry skin girlies.” —Sydney Malone, creative producer

Why it's worth it: Retinol may be the gold standard in skin-care products for smoothing fine lines, clearing up acne, and fading dark spots, but not everyone’s skin can handle the side effects. So it tracks that a brand built on sea-healing and skin wellness would dream up a night cream that delivers similar results without the sting. The Dream Night Cream pairs an algae-derived bio-retinol alternative (think: same line-smoothing perks as traditional retinol, but gentler) with rich, cushiony hydrators like shea butter, squalane, macadamia seed oil, and safflower seed oil to deeply moisturize while you sleep. A blend of calming botanicals (oat kernel flour, lavender, rosemary, and rice bran helps soothe stressed-out skin, while plant-based peptides and blue-green algae extract result in a more even texture by morning.

Why it's worth it: If you love the benefits of retinol but prefer a silky serum over a richer cream, the Dream Night Serum is your speed (and yes, you can layer it under the Dream Night Cream if you’re feeling extra). It uses the same bio-retinol alternative as the moisturizer, plus firming peptides to help smooth fine lines and improve skin texture while you sleep. In addition to being one of our favorite retinol-style treatments, it also doubles as a hyaluronic acid serum thanks to multiple forms of HA that pull in moisture, so skin looks more bouncy by the a.m. A blend of cucumber water, watermelon and apple extracts, plus red and green algae, helps hydrate, while lavender adds a soft, calming touch to your skin-care routine.

“I’m a little obsessed with lavender—I use a lavender pillow spray every night—so this serum’s scent feels instantly comforting. The texture is slightly thicker than most serums I’ve tried (a plus, since it doesn’t slip right out of the dropper), and it sinks in within seconds. Even with bio-retinol in the mix—the brand doesn’t disclose the percentage—I had zero irritation on my sensitive skin.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Why it's worth it: We don’t know exactly how a brand measures skin hydration increasing by 161%, but in Allure editor speak, it means your skin goes from “desert dry” to “dewy dumpling” pretty fast. That’s thanks to the five molecular weights of hyaluronic acid inside this 2024 Best of Beauty Award winner, which hydrate on multiple levels instead of just sitting on top of skin like a basic lotion. It’s also National Eczema Association-accepted, making it a high-performance body treatment that’s gentle enough for sensitive, reactive skin. Niacinamide helps soothe redness and strengthen the skin barrier, green microalgae brings antioxidant support, vegan peptides help improve firmness and texture over time, and aloe adds lightweight, calming hydration.

“Whenever possible, I moisturize my body like my face: With a hyaluronic acid serum—and this one from OSEA is my all-time favorite. I'll admit that part of what I love is the packaging. The serene green, the fogged glass, and the pump top that actually works. (By the way, it lets just enough serum out of the bottle without getting clogged—a feat for a thin formula like this!). This serum is so hydrating that you could just as well leave it without a more occlusive buttery layer, especially when it's irritatingly hot or humid. Still, I do like to follow up with an actual lotion afterward. You know what works beautifully over this? The brand's body butter; why not just go full-out seaweed wrap? Back to the formula: There are peptides to plump the skin, along with the brand's signature blue-green algae, which is touted as a kind of nourishing superfood. And for fellow sensitive-skin people out there, the serum is fragrance-free! I was able to use it on my non-preggo, preggo, and postpartum body without irritating my easily inflamed skin.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Why it's worth it: If we could have a whole ocean of this algae body wash, we’d happily swim in it, but for now, we’ll settle for lathering it on in the shower. Undaria Algae Body Wash uses the brand's signature antioxidant-rich seaweed from the beloved body oil, turning it into a silky gel cleanser that hydrates as it cleans. The formula uses gentle, plant- and coconut-based surfactants (read: no stripping suds), plus essential oils (including jojoba, grapefruit, and avocado) to leave skin soft and moisture locked in long after you’ve towel-dried. Once I'm out of the shower and dried off, I follow up with the Hyaluronic Body Serum because it's one of the few nonsticky body-care products my impatient self tolerates. Why it's worth it: If the Billie Eilish song starts playing in your head every time you reach for this serum, consider it part of the experience. A 2022 Best of Beauty Award winner, Ocean Eyes is a cooling rollerball gel that instantly wakes up tired undereyes. The formula pairs two types of seaweed (undaria and red algae) with caffeine to help depuff and firm, while hyaluronic acid draws in moisture for a smoother, plumper look. Peptides and quinoa seed extract target fine lines and dark circles over time, and albizia bark extract helps visibly counter any signs you stayed up late doom-scrolling.

Why it's worth it: You know how your feet somehow feel baby-smooth after a day at the beach, like the sand secretly gave you a free exfoliation? The Seaglow Resurfacing Scrub is that same idea—just far more refined, and meant for your face. The formula uses a blend of physical exfoliants (volcanic sand, finely milled rice powder, bentonite, and sea silt) to buff away dullness without feeling scratchy, while glycerin and cloudberry seed oil keep skin cushioned and soft. A blend of hibiscus flower extract, turmeric, and spirulina adds antioxidant support, caffeine helps energize the skin, and fruit enzymes from kiwi and grapefruit give an extra glow boost. Use this a couple of times a week for smoother, brighter skin (without getting sunburnt and sand in awkward places).

Why it’s worth it: Why is it that the second temperatures dip below 70, all the moisture seems to vanish from our lips? The brand’s Hyaluronic Lip Booster Oil is part oil, part treatment, and all hydration. This cushiony formula uses sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid) to pull in moisture and plump the lips, while castor seed and meadowfoam oils create a smooth, glossy shine. Rice bran and rosemary extracts deliver antioxidant protection, while sunflower and lupin seed oils target dryness from another angle—deeply nourishing to leave lips soft, conditioned, and visibly healthier.

    Tester feedback from Shipin

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"I know this may look, and be billed as, a kind of lip gloss—but it is so much more than that. It's this lovely balm-like product that actually enrobes your lips in lasting nourishment and hydration. Honestly, I'm talking hours of a supple pout that smells faintly citrus-y. It doesn't have a tint or anything, but because the Booster is so nourishing, it brings out your lips' natural color. You can't talk about this product (or any OSEA product, really) without also speaking to the packaging. The formula is a lovely honey color and looks so luxe in its frosted glass case, and the doe-foot applicator is so special. I've tried many applicators in my time as a beauty editor, and this is a high-quality one that is firm, plush, and draws just enough of the ‘booster’ out of the bottle and onto your lips—no potential for the product to flick onto your shirt." — Shipin, senior commerce director
